What do gardeners in El Dorado, a prosperous community outside Santa Fe, New Mexico, have in common with gardeners in Acornhoek, a mostly poor rural community near Kruger National Park in South Africa’s Mpumalanga Province? Both the El Dorado School Community Garden and two permaculture gardens started by the non-profit Seeds of Light in Acornhoek are part of a worldwide community garden movement, with its roots in the human need to be close to nature and the practical need for nutritious fresh food.
